The Planning Office for Urban Affairs works to address the tragedy of homelessness in Massachusetts in several important ways, from advocating for additional resources and programs for permanent housing for the homeless, to forming partnerships to build new, housing for those living in shelters or on the streets. With the challenging economic situation gripping our country today, and the number of homeless families and individuals living in hotels and motels, this work is becoming increasingly critical. As part of that effort, the Office has engaged in the following initiatives:

• POUA obtained grant funding from the Massachusetts Housing Partnership in 2008 to develop permanent housing for the homeless in partnership with non-profit social service organizations. POUA is working with the Pine Street Inn and St. Mary's Women & Children's Center on this initiative.
• POUA's President offered the organization's experience and expertise in 2008 by serving on Governor Patrick's Interagency Council on Housing and Homelessness (ICHH) New Supply Task Force, and Mayor Menino's Leading the Way III Housing Panel.
• POUA continues to work toward providing at least 25% of all rental housing it develops to address the critical need for affordable units which benefit those at risk of or transitioning from homelessness.
